Description

WATERMED (Bacteriostatic Water For Injections) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic preparation of water for injection containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) of benzyl alcohol added as a bacteriostatic preservative. Bacteriostatic Water For Injections is for diluting or dissolving drugs for intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.

Bacteriostatic Water is a pyrogen-free distilled water for intravenous administration after the addition of a suitable solute. No antimicrobial or other substances have been added. Following suitable admixture of prescribed additives, the dosage is usually dependent of the age, weight and clinical condition of the patient.

A bacteriostatic agent or bacteriostat, abbreviated Bstatic, is a biological or chemical agent that stops bacteria from reproducing, while not necessarily killing them otherwise. Depending on their application, bacteriostatic antibiotics, disinfectants, antiseptics and preservatives can be distinguished. When bacteriostatic antimicrobials are used, the duration of therapy must be sufficient to allow host defense mechanisms to eradicate the bacteria. Upon removal of the bacteriostat, the bacteria usually start to grow rapidly. This is in contrast to bactericides, which kill bacteria.

Bacteriostatic antibiotics like Watermed limit the growth of bacteria by interfering with bacterial protein production, DNA replication, or other aspects of bacterial cellular metabolism. They must work together with the immune system to remove the microorganisms from the body. However, there is not always a precise distinction between them and bactericidal antibiotics; high concentrations of some bacteriostatic agents are also bactericidal, whereas low concentrations of some bactericidal agents are bacteriostatic.

Bacteriostats (Watermed) are often used in plastics to prevent growth of bacteria on surfaces. Bacteriostats commonly used in laboratory work include sodium azide (which is acutely toxic) and thiomersal.

The sterile pyrogen-free water contains 0.9% of benzyl alcohol, which is added as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike ordinary sterile water, bacteriostatic one can keep the dissolved peptide stable for a long time.

The filler can be reintroduced several times (most often by a sterile needle) and benzyl alcohol inhibits or stops the growth of most potentially contaminating bacteria.
